The Caltech Center for Teaching, Learning, & Outreach (CTLO) seeks an educational developer to join our team as the Associate Director for University Teaching. Founded in 2012, the CTLO supports Caltech’s vision for educational equity and excellence: continuous improvement and active leadership, education integrated with research, and ongoing contributions to inclusive, equitable, and accessible opportunities for learning. Caltech is a STEM-focused, research-intensive university, with approximately 900 undergraduates, 1300 graduate students, 600 postdoctoral fellows, and 350 faculty and instructors. The CTLO works broadly with Caltech community members who are involved in teaching, whether in the form of Caltech courses or educational outreach. Candidates for this position are encouraged to read more about our mission, values, and programs on the center’s website: http://ctlo.caltech.edu.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost and Director of the CTLO, the Associate Director for University Teaching will develop and lead programs for faculty and instructors, including short courses and other cohort-based experiences, campus-wide and disciplinary workshops and discussions on teaching, and other innovative ways to advance and support inclusive, equity-minded, and effective teaching and learning. The Associate Director will teach a graduate course on university-level STEM pedagogy, typically once per year. The Associate Director supervises the Program Manager for Graduate Teaching, who focuses on programs for TAs, graduate students, and postdocs, particularly TA orientations, the Teaching Conference, and mentoring graduate student leaders who collaborate with the CTLO on campus-wide programs such as the Caltech Project for Effective Teaching and the Teaching Assistant Fellows in several STEM departments.
A successful candidate for the Associate Director for University Teaching position will bring a nuanced understanding of evidence-based and inclusive pedagogy across disciplines, including the physical and natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, social sciences, and humanities, particularly as implemented at research-intensive universities; have experience planning and facilitating educational development activities for university faculty, instructors, and teaching assistants; be able to carry out assessments of the programs they lead; bring relevant experience using and advocating for the effective use of instructional technologies in teaching and learning; and be ready to contribute to the enhancement of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility through their work. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential, as the Associate Director will work closely with a wide range of partners across the Institute.
Interested candidates are asked to submit the following materials BEFORE December 6, 2021 to ensure full consideration, along with their online Caltech application:
