Director, CLEAR Center for Learning, Education, and Research in the Sciences (CLEAR), Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio

Oberlin College seeks a Director for the Center for Learning, Education, and Research in the Sciences (CLEAR) funded by Oberlin College in support of Oberlin College’s 2017 Inclusive Excellence grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The goal of the Inclusive Excellence project is to promote the persistence and success of all students in STEM fields. This is a full-time 12-month, Administrative and Professional Staff position with a competitive salary, starting in January 2018. Initial appointment is for one year with the possibility for renewal.

The Director will provide support for the mission of inclusive excellence in STEM through:

  • Recruiting, training, and supervising peer mentors, peer tutors, and student workshop leaders; 
  • Facilitating campus-wide learning communities and assisting in the initiation and leadership of departmental action and reflection teams;
  • Supervising and mentoring a post-graduate assistant on the Inclusive Excellence grant;
  • Coordinating seminars, events, and programming such as a campus-wide Lab Crawl and an ongoing event series on science and society;
  • Designing and implementing workshops for students on basic and advanced quantitative skills led by the Director, faculty, and/or student workshop leaders; and
  • Serving as a resource for STEM programming on campus.

Background in science or science education beyond the Bachelor’s level required, as well as a commitment to diversity and inclusion. A Ph.D. in the sciences or science education and knowledge of current pedagogical literature and inclusive practices are preferred. Candidates are expected to have strong interpersonal, organizational, and quantitative skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across the campus environment. Undergraduate teaching experience is preferred. Experience working in a multi-cultural context is desirable.
