Director of Faculty Teaching Initiatives - Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, Yale University

Position focus:

The Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning at Yale University seeks to fill a key leadership position to oversee educational development programs and services for all Yale faculty. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Faculty Teaching Initiatives provides strategic leadership in order to promote teaching excellence for faculty in Yale College, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and the professional schools. The Director will create and execute high-impact educational development activities and lead the Faculty Teaching Initiatives Team in strategically planning and programming all faculty development initiatives for the Poorvu Center. The Director will serve as the key liaison for school and department-based teaching and learning initiatives. The Director will work to promote teaching excellence and equity across the University and build communities that advance teaching and learning at Yale. This person provides pedagogical expertise to a vibrant center offering a broad array of programs and services that support teaching excellence campus-wide. This person also ensures appropriate resources, support, and training to cultivate an environment of excellent teaching and success in learning in the context of an elite research institution. In addition, the Director is responsible for the structure, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive program for faculty development in teaching. This person will:

  • Collaborate with Poorvu Center senior leadership, faculty, and other university leaders to assess needs, develop programming, and evaluate strategies to enhance knowledge and skills of faculty.

  • Provide leadership and development to a team of faculty developers charged with supporting teaching excellence for all of Yale’s schools and programs.

  • Promote inclusive teaching and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion in programs, curricula, and classrooms.

  • Provide faculty and instructional staff with research-based resources on best practices, support for curriculum development and innovation, consultation on course design projects, forums for collaboration and community, consulting services on pedagogy and technology, as well as workshops, seminars, and other forms of professional development in teaching.

  • Partner with academic units, faculty leadership and committees, and individual faculty to enhance instructional effectiveness in the design and planning of curricula, courses, learning environments, student learning assessment, and allocation of resources.

  • Collaborate with Poorvu Center teams, library colleagues, and academic leadership on the vision and planning for emerging teaching and learning initiatives.

  • Serve as a pedagogy resource for schools, departments, and programs; serve on relevant committees and task forces; and represent Executive Director as needed.

  • Stay abreast of developments in pedagogy and related fields and disseminate relevant ideas, programs, products, and services through web, conference, and other venues.

Skills and Abilities:

  1. Demonstrated ability to work with faculty and instructors to promote teaching excellence through incorporation of evidence-based teaching methods.

  2. Demonstrated ability and willingness to gain a comprehensive understanding of the academic context, respecting and appreciating the boundaries and possibilities of teaching in a research-focused institution

  3. A track record of working effectively across academic divisions, particularly with respect to translating education research for application by a highly-educated and diverse institutional population

  4. Demonstrated track record of commitment to addressing diversity issues in higher education; demonstrated skills for creating inclusive learning environments.

  5. Demonstrated ability for superior teaching at the college level.

  6. Display high degree of comfort speaking in front of varied audience types, and a developed sense of self-awareness with areas of strengths and weaknesses, particularly as they relate to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  7. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including a track record of fostering collaboration and lasting partnerships and cooperation through teamwork.

  8. Demonstrate track record of experimenting with program development to meet the needs of different groups; ability to connect to a vision and carry out a concrete plan of action.

  9. Must possess professional maturity with the ability to take initiative and operate independently.

  10. Display a high degree of analytic ability and excellent writing skills.

Required Education & Experience:

  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree and 6 years of experience teaching at the university level or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Faculty development leadership experience.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

  1. Tenure track or other full-time university teaching experience.

  2. Experience in faculty development at a research institution

  3. Curriculum, program development and/or course design experience; experience with approaches to assessment of student learning outcomes.
