Faculty Consultant for Teaching and Learning Innovation, University of Tennessee Knoxville


At the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UTK), Teaching & Learning Innovation (TLI) advances the Volunteer Experience through programs, services, and partnerships that support faculty and enrich student learning through our focus on faculty development and equipping our faculty to be great teachers. We focus on evidence-based teaching and learning practices, experiential learning, and engaging faculty in the creation and implementation of educational experiences and environments that are engaging, innovative, and outcomes-focused.

Currently, TLI is seeking a creative, collaborative, and self-motivated faculty development professional with a strong history of successfully working with faculty to integrate technology into their teaching in order to improve student learning and enhance classroom activities and experiences.

Expected pay range: $47,000 - $55,000 dependent upon experience.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing, implementing and leading large and small-scale faculty development initiatives that support evidence based teaching and engaged learning across the university, with an emphasis on the integration of academic technology as a way to foster student achievement and success. These opportunities include, but are not limited to, workshops, departmental trainings, resource development, unit-wide initiatives, and other programming efforts designed to help faculty integrate new and innovative pedagogies into their teaching practice.

  • Providing consultation support to tenure and non-tenure track faculty, as well as graduate student teachers, in small group and 1 on 1 settings to support them and ensure that one’s unique instructional needs related to the use of technology are met.

  • Promoting best practices related to the innovative and effective use of teaching and learning strategies and the infusion of instructional technologies in courses to campus faculty, instructors, and graduate student teachers, as well as TLI staff members who work with faculty in various capacities related to unit priorities.

  • Supporting and training graduate students regarding the incorporation of technology into their courses, as they begin their teaching careers.

  • Other duties as assigned related to faculty and instructional development



  • Master’s Degree

  • 1 – 3 years of professional experience successfully working with faculty to incorporate effective traditional and technology enhanced teaching and learning strategies into their courses

  • Extensive knowledge of and the ability to follow established principles of instructional design, development and evaluation

  • Knowledge and understanding of current best teaching practices and trends in higher education

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of inclusive teaching

  • Knowledge of instructional development and evaluation practices (e.g., program/course design)

  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of active learning and learning-centered approaches to teaching

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in large-scale workshops and events

  • Excellent communication skills in small group settings, as well as individual meetings and consultations

  • The ability to plan, execute and evaluate workshops, training and faculty development opportunities

  • The ability to think creatively to solve problems

  • The ability to work with others to produce programming that addresses the needs and perspectives of diverse groups

  • The ability to work on various projects at once and meet the associated deadlines

  • The ability to utilize Microsoft Office products, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel

  • Evidence of working with tenure and non-tenure track faculty to incorporate technology into their courses under varied conditions and in different academic courses

  • Strong experience using a learning management system (LMS)

  • Demonstrated evidence of progressive work in the field of instructional technology on college and university campuses with faculty of various backgrounds and experience levels


  • Doctoral Degree

  • 3-5 years of professional experience successfully working with faculty to incorporate effective traditional and technology enhanced teaching and learning strategies into their courses

  • Knowledge of and experience in educating and supporting faculty to adopt and utilize principles and practices associated with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and fueling their research agenda through evidenced based teaching

  • Demonstrated experience of successful work within the fields of instructional technology from multiple college and university campuses with faculty from different academic backgrounds

  • Evidence of professional development (publications, presentations, and certifications, etc.) in the field of instructional technology within a higher education setting

  • Experience working with faculty and instructional staff to design or redesign courses taught by multiple faculty members as part of large scale projects and seminars with varied formats

  • Experience using the learning management system, Canvas
