How to change your email notifications for the Academic Careers & Job Postings community

As a member of this learning community, you will automatically start receiving email notifications about discussions posted in the community. How often you receive those notifications is entirely up to you. There are three main ways that community members can customize the frequency of email notifications. You can change your preferences for all learning communities, for a specific learning community, and for a specific discussion thread within a community. Users should update your overall settings to a frequency you like, then change community- and discussion-specific settings to ensure you stay up-to-date on items of particular interest.


##Update your overall email settings
Once you’re logged into the learning community, you should see your first initial in the upper right hand corner of your screen. Click it and select the gear icon that appears in the dropdown menu to access your preferences.

Page down to see the Email and Activity Summary sections. Under “Email” you can select the content you wish to be notified about, and under “Activity Summary” you can select how frequently you would like to receive notifications.

Email settings allow you to determine the content of your notifications and what specific activities merit a notification. Note: If you uncheck “Send me email notifications even when I am active on the site,” you will no longer receive notifications for content that is posted when you’re on the Discourse site.

Activity Summary lets you change the frequency of your notifications.

Mailing list mode overrides your Activity Summary settings so that you receive updates regardless of your activity on the site.

##Update email settings for specific learning communities
Once you log into the learning community, the discussion topic you selected will appear on the screen. Click the name of the learning community, listed underneath the discussion topic.

Now you can see a list of all discussion threads posted in that learning community. Click the circle icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen to edit your notification preferences for content posted in this community.

Watching means you will receive a notification anytime someone posts to the community. We recommend using this setting to receive comprehensive notifications on your most important communities.

Tracking means you will receive a notification anytime someone mentions your @username or replies to you.

Normal is the default setting.

##Update email settings for specific discussion threads

Once you log into the learning community, the discussion topic you selected will appear on the screen. You’ll be able to see the original post in this thread, as well as any replies to that original post. Hover your mouse over the open circle icon below the discussion thread to update your notification settings for this thread.

Watching means you will receive a notification anytime someone posts to the thread. We recommend using this setting to receive comprehensive notifications on your most important communities.

Tracking means you will receive a notification anytime someone mentions your @username or replies to you in this thread.

Normal is the default setting.
