Postdoctoral Fellowship, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

The RTMUS research group is an education research group directed by Vilma Mesa at the University of Michigan School of Education, is seeking a postdoctoral fellow in mathematics education to support the work of a federally funded project that studies the use of dynamic textbooks in calculus, linear algebra, and abstract algebra. The fellow will be directly involved in collecting and analyzing the data collected, which includes various types of surveys of students and instructors, video recordings, interviews, and documents.

We are looking for an individual who is ambitious, hard-working, and motivated to spend time increasing his or her research and writing skills. We seek an individual who is committed to scholarship that advances the growth of knowledge for the public good and somebody who can contribute to, as well as benefit from, the lab culture of the RTMUS group. RTMUS has four projects, three federally funded, that are at different stages of development and archival data. Opportunities for secondary analysis of various records are available.

The successful applicant works well collaboratively, is able to work on our Ann Arbor campus and to travel as needed, is able to maintain simultaneous attention to a variety of tasks, and amenable to taking initiative as well as responding positively to direction. Working knowledge of multiple methodologies and research designs is a plus, while disposition to learn new methods is an expectation. We are especially interested in scholars with substantial interests in understanding the work of, and knowledge involved in, teaching in post-secondary settings. Experience as university instructor is expected: alternatively, experience in high school is acceptable. Command of the literature on research on curriculum and undergraduate mathematics is expected, and broad knowledge of higher education, teaching and teacher knowledge desirable. A completed PhD in Mathematics Education or in Mathematics and excellent command of the English language (speaking and writing) are required. Opportunities for involvement in teaching may be available to complement the experience.
