STEM Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow, UMBC

The College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a two-year, grant-funded Teaching Postdoctoral Associate position supporting the STEM BUILD at UMBC Initiative. STEM BUILD, funded by the National Institutes of Health in 2014, is a STEM student success initiative and research study to establish a national model of comprehensive support to expand and increase the success of students seeking degrees in the sciences, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The initiative combines innovation with many effective components of existing UMBC programs, including targeted programming and coursework, structured advising, a living and learning community (LLC), scholarship support, and on-going emphasis on research experiences and academic performance. The BUILD Program is overseen by CNMS & Office of the Provost.

The successful applicant will be a member of the instructional staff of the STEM BUILD at UMBC Initiative and will be responsible for developing and/or teaching life science and interdisciplinary STEM curricula. Specifically, the successful applicant will co-teach an eight-week course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) for students in the BUILD Training Program that combines bacteriophage characterization, bioinformatics, and analytical analysis of small molecules and proteins. The successful applicant will also teach interdisciplinary SCI 101L: Quantitative Reasoning – Measurement and Skills laboratory for students in their first year of the BUILD Training Program, as well as a disciplinary course related to their area of expertise. Finally, the successful applicant will work collaboratively with the Director of the Science Education Research Unit and STEM LLC Coordinator to develop a four-week summer bridge program for incoming students in the BUILD Training Program as well as STEM programming for students living in the STEM LLC.

In addition to the above teaching-focused activities, the successful applicant will also be expected to mentor a team of undergraduates in an eight-week summer research project and develop and implement non-credit workshops aimed at developing students’research and related skills. The teaching postdoctoral associate will also be expected to develop, implement, and disseminate a pedagogical research project in collaboration with the Director the Science Education Research Unit and others on the STEM BUILD at UMBC team. Additional activities include informal advising and mentoring of students supported by STEM BUILD at UMBC; support BUILD Training Program and the BUILD a Bridge to STEM Internship student recruitment efforts; support and attend meetings and events involving BUILD students and staff; and perform other duties as assigned.

This position requires a doctoral degree in a life science discipline (as of March 2019), preferably with 1-5 years of postdoctoral experience. Candidates must have publications related to their specific field of study and at least one semester of teaching experience, which can include being a teaching assistant. Must have strong written and verbal communication abilities, leadership experience and excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrated proficiency with computers, data management and analysis programs, and technical experience with laboratory equipment common to a life science laboratory is required. Experience with educational research and summer bridge programming preferred. Note: Position requires some evening and weekend work and overnight travel on occasion. A background check will be required for this position.
