Teaching and Learning Development Specialist, University of California San Diego

The University of California San Diego seeks a proactive, team-oriented, and innovative person to serve as Teaching & Learning Development Specialist (TLDS) for the Center for Engaged Teaching (CET) within the Teaching + Learning Commons. The TLDS will provide expertise to support innovative teaching and learning to faculty and instructors campus-wide.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to work collaboratively and creatively with faculty to plan, develop, and deliver instruction and provide instructional design support. The incumbent will report to the CET Director and work with a team of talented TLDSs. The TLDSs will consult with faculty on design, its processes, methodologies and timelines. They will also partner with faculty in the development of instructional materials, assessments and media-rich learning objects attending to research-based effective practices.

Responsibilities will include the development, structuring and editing of learning materials and assessment tools as well as creating and managing a system of course improvement, using faculty development as a foundation to implement new teaching and assessment methodologies. The TLDS researches and stays current on active learning methods, and works with faculty to integrate these methods into the curriculum. The position also supports faculty in acquiring resources that will inform and develop their skills in evidence-based course delivery methods.


  • Knowledge of adult educational methodology including development of learning outcomes, assessment, and active learning experiences.

  • Knowledge of the research and theoretical perspectives on the various factors affecting diverse teaching and learning, such as the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

  • Demonstrated experience with learning analytics, statistical analysis, design and modeling, data analysis.

  • Proven ability to develop and assess faculty development curricula with ability to offer a high level of service-oriented assistance with patience and social emotional competency, including educators with varied computing skills.

  • High level of digital fluency, including appropriate, functional social media, and mobile learning tools.

  • Demonstrated ability to make presentations to both large and small groups as well as to communicate effectively on a one-to-one basis.

  • Proven interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and effectively (both verbally and in writing) with faculty in an educational environment.
